15th. OCTOBER 2017
After the summer recess the Sliema Lions Club will be holding its first outing, on Sunday 15th October, to the Augustine Church and monastery, in Old Bakery Street, Valletta. The church is also known by its Maltese name, Santu Wistin.
The church was founded in 1571, it was among the first churches to be built in the new city of Valletta. It was re-built in 1765, yet it retains many features from the original church.
In 1964 Archbishop Michael Gonzi elevated the church to a Parish Church.
We will be guided by the learned Professor Reverend Salvinu Caruana. Among the many treasures the church possesses paintings by Mattia Preti and the renowned statue of
St. Rita.
