Twinning Lions Club Licata Sicily and Sliema Malta 17.6.2017

Excerpt from Twinning document
The concept of ‘twinning’ between Malta and Sicily has a long history. Licata hosted many Maltese fleeing from the Ottoman invaders in 1565. Almost a century later, there was a new migration of Maltese people to Licata, who settled in the San Paolo district. This Became the first town hamlet built out outside the walls of the city of Licata in the the north-eastern slopes of Mount Saint Angelo. This area was dedicated to Saint Paul, protector and patron of Malta.
There are countless business relations between Sicily and Malta, between Licata and Malta. There  various cultural and commercial contacts set up by the municipality of Licata and the municipality of Valletta, Involving traders, farmers, and professionals of both localities. This gives us a very firm basis for setting up the twinning between Licata Lions Club and Lions Club Sliema, Malta.

Continuing Contacts With Ghana

On Friday October 28 Lion President John Rusher together with Lions Vivienne Zammit and Margaret Frendo paid a visit to the High Commissioner of Ghana Kenneth Tachie to discuss how our Club can help needy persons in Ghana.

The visit was made after through our Club, Gauda Shoes donated a number of brand news shoes to be sent to Ghana. During the visit to Gauda Shoes, Lion President John presented the Club’s 40th Anniversary bannerette to the owner of Gauda Shoes.

This donation follows the collection of used eye glasses to be given to Ghanaian patients which the High Commissioner will be personally handing over to a hospital in Ghana.

This was another good deed by our Club and shows that Lions can help people not only in their home land but also in countries overseas.
